Truly embodying history in the making, Justice Ayesha A. Malik is the first woman ever to serve as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan– a defining moment in the nation’s history. Shattering the glass ceiling, Justice Ayesha A. Malik has had a remarkable legal career – she decided important issues regarding the empowerment of women, the right to vote, as well as maintaining a women quota in Government departments and medical colleges. In a recent landmark case, she declared illegal the two finger test for determining virginity in rape cases. She has chaired the Judicial Officers Female Supervisory Committee which looks at all issues related to female judicial officers. As a member of the Board of Punjab Judicial Academy, she helped develop courses on gender sensitization of court processes and trainings for gender based violence cases. She initiated the first Punjab Women Judges Conference in 2016 and has successfully held three such conferences in which the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) participated in the year 2017.
Celebrating Pakistan’s 75th Independence Day, FWBL pays tribute to iconic women whose legacies are strongly interwoven in the fabric of the nation’s heritage. Their remarkable achievements, in their own unique way, contribute to who we are as a nation today.
